The cost of solar, batteries and heat pumps in Scotland
The cost of making your Scottish home greener depends on your property, your energy use and the combination of technologies you choose. Rather than quoting flat numbers, we survey your home first and give you an itemised quote — with a representative finance example — so you can decide with confidence. Loans available, subject to status.

What influences the cost of each technology
Every Scottish home is different — a stone-built tenement flat in Edinburgh, a detached villa in the Highlands and a modern estate house in Fife all have different requirements. Here are the main factors that shape an installed quote.
Solar panels
- System size (kWp) — sized to your roof area and daytime electricity use.
- Roof type, orientation and pitch — south-facing roofs typically suit the largest arrays.
- Scaffold access and roof condition —复杂 access adds labour time.
- Panel choice — efficiency and warranty tier affect the installed price.
Battery storage
- Usable capacity (kWh) — matched to how much surplus solar you expect to store.
- AC vs DC coupled — your existing setup determines the simplest integration.
- Inverter and battery chemistry — lithium iron phosphate (LFP) is common for home use.
- Whether added with solar or retrofitted — combining both in one install is usually tidier.
Air source heat pumps
- Heat loss calculation — your home’s insulation and glazing set the required output.
- Radiator or underfloor upgrades — larger heat pumps may need bigger emitters.
- Hot water cylinder — most installs include a new cylinder suited to heat-pump temperatures.
- Location of the outdoor unit — needs airflow and a suitable mounting base.
Combining technologies can make sense
Many Scottish homeowners combine solar panels with battery storage so that electricity generated during long summer evenings is available through darker winter periods. Pairing an air source heat pump with solar means the heat that warms your home is partly produced from your own roof. Because these technologies interact, a survey is the only way to see what suits your property — and the cost of a combined install is not simply the sum of three separate quotes.
0% VAT until 31 March 2027
The UK government currently applies 0% VAT on the installation of solar panels, battery storage and air source heat pumps in residential properties until 31 March 2027. Your itemised quote shows the VAT treatment clearly so you know exactly what you are paying. After that date, VAT rules may change and we will reflect whatever applies at the time of installation.
How green home loans help you spread the cost
A green home loan lets you spread the cost of your installation over time rather than paying the full amount upfront. Loans available, subject to status. When we send your quote, we include a representative finance example so you can see what spreading the cost could look like. There is no obligation to take up finance — you can also pay directly if you prefer.
